KEY LARGO Volunteer Fire Department

The Mission of the Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department is to provide the highest level of fire and rescue services possible through community involvement, education, and prevention.  Their team of friendly and dedicated professionals will strive for excellence to serve our community in paradise.

Since 1955, Key Largo residents have had a volunteer fire department providing fire and rescue services to the community. The KLFR&EMS District is proud to contract the fire services from the Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department.

The volunteers officially began providing their services to rural Key Largo in 1955 when they received an old fire truck from Tavernier. Throughout their history, the commitment and dedication of the volunteers may be observed with the major projects they have undertaken over the years to improve the department and its services to provide outstanding support to the community; including:

. Identifying 49 locations for the installation for the Phases I-5 Fire Hydrant Project

. Building the first fire station at MM 99

. Constructing the North Fire Station at MM 106 dedicated to Past Chief, “David Gow”

. Certifying members as rescue divers for water emergencies and recoveries

. Participating in training and conducting fundraising to help provide for the equipment and supplies the department needed.

. Being nationally-recognized for their excellence and proficiency in vehicle accident extrication.

The Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department operations and administration is overseen by the Corporate Board of Directors and the Fire Chief.

  KEY LARGO AMBULANCE CORP.

On October 8, 2005, the Key Largo Volunteer Ambulance Corps celebrated 50 years of service to the Key Largo and surrounding communities.  It has come a long way, from neighbors helping care for the sick and injured with the barest of supplies, to the 1970-1992 Doris Kemp years, to today, 2007.

Key Largo Volunteer Ambulance Corps is an ALS service with four ambulances, two of which are run 24/7.  The current membership is approximately forty paramedics, EMTs, and first responders.

The Ambulance Corp is also a satellite campus for Florida Keys Community College and Emergency Educational Institute International, training first responders, EMTs and paramedics.  CPR and First Aid are also taught here.

Key Largo Volunteer Ambulance Corps operations and administration is overseen by a Board of Directors and EMS Chief.

The Corps continues to proudly serve its community with highly trained professionals, many of whom are still neighbors helping neighbors.
