TONY ALLEN - CHAIRMAN (Seat 1)

Commissioner Allen was elected to the Board in 2012.

Tony was elected as Vice-Chairman in November 2014,

and has been serving as Chairman since November of 2015.

.

The #1 reason why Tony Allen ran for the District Board was to ensure tax dollars were spent properly and that the departments were not micro-managed.

Prior to Moving to the Keys

Tony lived in Pensacola, where he was involved in the funeral business. He worked for a large firm of funeral homes and cemeteries in Pensacola, FL for five years.     Tony was actively involved in the Jaycees for over ten years and held various club offices, including President and Vice President.  Tony served in the United States Marine Corps and was medically discharged. He has been an active member of American Legion for over 15 years.

In 2010, Tony and Jacqui moved to the Keys because they wanted to live in a small, close-knit community, and together they own and operate their family-owned business.

Professional Life & Affiliations

He graduated from Bradford County High School in Starke, FL in 1998, and graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service with an A. S. in 2003. He completed his National Board, served a one year internship at Jones Funeral Home in Starke, FL, passed his State Examination Board and received his Florida Funeral Director and Embalmer license. He also received his Bachelor in Business Management from American International University in 2005. Tony and Jacqui Allen own Allen-Beyer Funeral Home in Key Largo. His family includes four “fur children”, two cats Pixie and Gary, and two dogs Paris and Simon.

Community Activities

Tony has become actively involved in our community. He is a member of the Key Largo Rotary; Past Treasurer and Membership Chair of Sons & Daughters of Italy (4 years); member and Past Vice President of the Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center (2 years), he resigned when he was elected to the KLFR&EMS Board; a life member of American Legion Post #333. And is a life member of the Florida Keys Gator Club.

Tony is a Mariners Hospital Founder's Society member, a member of the Young Philanthropists of Baptist Hospital, and Elks member. You can see him smiling when he talks about participating in the Sons & Daughters of Italy Guinness Book of World Records Bocce event, where they set a world record for 24 hours and 29 minutes of continuous Bocce tournament playing!

KAY CULLEN - COMMISSIONER (Seat 2)

 Commissioner Cullen was elected to the Board in 2014,

and Kay was elected as Secretary/Treasurer in November 2016.

The number #1 reason why Cullen ran for the KLFR&EMS Board was because: 

As a taxpayer and member of the Ambulance Corps, I am in a unique position to observe first hand the role that the Key Largo Fire Rescue & Emergency Services District has in providing first class fire and emergency medical services to our citizens and visitors. I want to ensure that this first class service continues in the most cost-effective manner as well as encourage skilled volunteerism within both agencies.

Prior to Moving to the Keys

Kay was raised in Central Florida and moved to the Keys in 1986.

Professional Life & Affiliations

Kay has degrees in both Education and Allied Legal Sciences. She worked as a paralegal for 20 years before beginning her retirement. She retired from the Key Largo Volunteer Ambulance Corps after 20+ years serving as a volunteer paramedic when the District passed a Resolution disqualifying sitting Commissioners from serving as volunteers.

Community Activities

Kay has been a past Executive Director of The Good Health Clinic (4 years), a Board Member of both the Florida Keys Community College Foundation (3 years) and Key Largo Volunteer Ambulance Corps (6 years) where she served as the Secretary. She is an active Adjunct Instructor for Florida Keys Community College teaching the EMT classes.

 


BOB THOMAS - COMMISSIONER (Seat 3)

Commissioner Thomas was elected to the Board in 2012.

Bob was elected and served as Vice-Chairman from November 2012 - October 2014,

and served as Chairman from November 2014 - October 2015.

 

The reasons why Commissioner Thomas ran for the District Board are because:

He wanted to contribute time and service to the community, and he wanted to see the fire department remain a volunteer department.

Prior to Moving to the Keys

Bob was born in Pennsylvania, but has DNA all over northern Alabama. As a Navy “brat” he attended eleven different schools throughout the world.

He moved to South Florida in 1969 and has lived in the area for 34 years including Miami Lakes and Hialeah for over 21 years and in Coconut Grove on a 41' Morgan sailboat for two years.

He sailed to Keys for years and enjoyed the beauty of the Keys and the people . . . and that is why he and Kristi moved to the Florida Keys in the summer of 2002.

Professional Life & Affiliations

As an airline pilot for over42 years, Bob traveled extensively nationally and internationally. He worked primarily with Eastern Airlines, and also flew with Southwest Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines, American Eagle, Copa in Panama, Canal Zone.

He is a past member of the ALPA Airline Pilots Association, and Allied Pilots Association. Bob was a member of the Optimist Club in Miami Lakes for over 15 years.

About two and one-half years ago, after retiring from the airlines, he and his wife opened Key Largo Chocolates. He may be seen traveling throughout the Keys in the bright lime-green Key largo Chocolate truck.

Community Activities

Bob is currently the Chair of the Rural Health Network, a Key Largo Chamber Board of Director, and member of the Islamorada and Ocean Reef Chambers, and a member of the Key Largo Rotary. He was one of the dunkee's at the Key Largo 4 of July Picnic this year, and said he “could not keep track of how many times he was dunked”, but he said, “It was a lot of fun and will do it again!”

He is active in St. James Episcopal Church in the Vestry and as a lay leader, and is a past member of the Upper Keys Sailing Club. He was on the Board of Harborage Homeowner Association for several years, and a member of the Key Largo Island of Federation Homeowner's Association for two years. He also picks up and delivers food to the Burton Memorial Food Bank every week.

When Bob is not working at the Chocolate Factory or for the District, he loves to golf, travel, and visit with friends and family. He has four sons and Kristi has two daughters, so they enjoy spending time with one of their eleven grandkids. In August 2013 he went golfing in Ireland!

 

 


 

GEORGE MIRABELLA - VICE-CHAIRMAN (Seat 4)

Commissioner Mirabella was elected to the Board in 2012 and re-elected in 2014.

George has served as Vice Chairman from November 2015 to the present.

The #1 reason why Commissioner Mirabella ran for the board was to:

Increase local volunteer membership in the Fire Department and Ambulance Corporation by encouraging volunteerism, participating and re-establishing the Explorer Program with Coral Shores High School to enable students interested in becoming professional firefighters to become certified.

Prior to Moving to the Keys

George and his family lived in North Bellmore, Long Island, New York, where he is a lifetime member of the North Bellmore Volunteer Fire Department. George started volunteering with the North Bellmore Volunteer Fire Department in 1972.  After 10 years of training and schooling George was promoted to Captain in 1982.  George and his wife, Annmarie and his son Thomas moved to Key Largo in 2000.  George was recertified as an EMT in 2004 and became a member of the Key Largo Volunteer Ambulance Corp.

George then became a member Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department and became a certified Florida Fire Fighter II in 2005.

The District adopted a resolution in 2015 disqualifying sitting Commissioners from serving as volunteers with the Department; and George retired from the Key largo Volunteer Ambulance Corp. and the Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department after serving as a volunteer for 11 years.

Professional Life & Affiliations

George has been an employee of the Florida Keys Electric Coop since 2006.

 

 

 

 

 

 


DANNY POWERS

(Commissioner, Seat 5)

  Danny Powers was elected to the KLFR&EMS District Board in November of 2016.

 The number #1 reason Commissioner Powers ran for office is because:

He wanted to ensure that tax dollars were spent properly and he wanted to work with the community to give the best possible service for the most reasonable cost.

Moving to the Keys

Danny Powers was born and raised in a suburb south of Chicago.  He moved to the Keys in 1980 with his wife, and worked as a marine mechanic at Ocean Reef Club.  While working there, Danny volunteered at the Ocean Reef Volunteer Fire Department.  That is when he decided to continue on to get his state certifications.  Danny attended Miami Dade College taking the EMT/Paramedic courses and graduated in 1988.  He began working for Monroe County EMS in 1990 and retired after 24 years of service.  In 1999, he graduated as a firefighter from the Division of State Fire Marshalls.

Community Activities

Danny was a volunteer with the Key Largo Ambulance Corporation for six years.

While his children were growing up, he volunteered at both Key Largo School and Coral Shores High School.

Danny was a volunteer for Odyssey of the Mind as a coach for twelve years and then became the Regional Director for the Island Region for Monroe County Schools.  

He is also an active volunteer for Silver Shores Community for the past thirty-five years.

Now Danny is spending his time rebuilding a 1950 Chevy Bel Air, and his two grown children, who live in Miami, are also keeping him busy remodeling their homes.
